Batia Eisenwasser-Jancourt (BBHS ’60)

Born in Haifa, Israel

Batia Eisenwasser-Jancourt emigrated to Montreal from Israel with her family in 1951. After graduating from BBHS, Jancourt studied fine arts at Sir George Williams University (now Concordia) and at the École des Beaux Arts in Montreal. Before returning to Israel in 1971, she did post graduate work at Concordia University and taught art at Dawson College. In 1971, Eisenwasser-Jancourt began teaching at Haifa University. She served as Head of the Art Department from 1975 to 1994.

Eisenwasser-Jancourt is a figurative painter working in mixed techniques and media. Her work is based on personal history, memory and cultural clichés and motifs. In addition to working on canvas with acrylic and oils, Eisenwasser-Jancourt uses re-cycled, ready-made and found photos, texts, and objects to explore the interplay of painting replica and reproduction.

Since 1971, Eisenwasser-Jancourt has shown her work in many solo and group exhibitions in Israel, Europe and Canada.  She currently lives and works in Ein Hod, Israel. Click here to see a selection of her works.
