Avrum Morrow (BBHS ’40)

Born: 1923, Montreal, Quebec

Morrow attended Fairmont Elementary School and then BBHS. He is both a successful businessman and an art and music enthusiast.

After studying engineering physics at McGill University, Morrow co-founded Avmor, a manufacturer of professional cleaning chemicals, in 1948. Today, the company is an industry pioneer that employs some 100 people. Avmor is committed to ensuring the health of the surrounding community through the promotion of its sustainable cleaning products, solutions, and programs.

As an art enthusiast, Morrow has commissioned more than 400 paintings, sculptures, photographs and drawings by artists of all calibers which are on display at his Old Montreal headquarters. He tributes his love of art to a teacher at Fairmont. As he recounts “Esther Tammarin was one teacher who made an impact on me when I was at Fairmont Elementary School, and who, upon reflection, stimulated my lifelong interest in art. She was original in her approach to teaching and had us do projects that were not part of the standard curriculum”.

His love of music was sparked at BBHS. “I still remember Mr. Herbert, who sang us arias from all kinds of operas. Thanks to his enthusiasm, Mr. Herbert left me with an appreciation of music.”

Morrow has been a long-time supporter of Concordia University where he established the Dora Morrow Fellowship for Excellent Achievement in Visual Arts. He also supports McGill University and the University of Ottawa among other institutions.

Morrow has received awards from the City of Montreal in both 1996 and 2000 as well as the Dobson Fellowship from McGill University in 2005.  His generosity and community work earned him the honour of being named to the Order of Canada in 2007,  the first honouree from the janitorial industry. In that same year, Morrow also received an Honorary Life Membership to Concordia University.
